Former Sheriff's Deputy Charged With Sexual Assault

A former Nebraska sheriff's deputy has pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a mentally disabled woman. LeRoy Svoboda of Silver Creek entered the not guilty plea on Tuesday in Valley County District Court.

Authorities say the 67-year-old Svoboda sexually assaulted a 27-year-old mentally disabled woman last June. An affidavit says the woman gave birth to a baby in January, and DNA samples taken from the baby and Svoboda were a match.

Svoboda is a former sheriff's deputy in Valley, Sherman and Greeley counties and a former police officer in Ord and Shelton. He remains free on $1,500 bond. His trial is tentatively set for September.
