
National studies show the foreclosure rate on mortgage loans has increased by more than 50 percent since 2000.
But a free service is reaching out to those struggling here in Lincoln.
The state is urging Nebraska homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgages to contact a counseling service that's helping people get back on track free of charge.
Neighborworks is a non-profit counseling service reaching out to those Nebraska Homeowners who are struggling with their mortgage payments.
The service is completely free of charge and can help a homeowner get back on track and work out a plan so they don't lose their home.
"We can help them work out a budget that's very key to help the clients figure out how much house payment they can afford and then council them on what the bank is going to do what is realistic can they get a modification a re-payment plan and then we actually help negotiate on their behalf with the bank," Serena Reeves, of Neighborworks said.
Reeves says people need to also look out for scams that are targeting homeowners struggling with their payments.
The Nebraska Foreclosure Protection act lays out a homeowners legal rights and tips to protect yourself from bring ripped-off.
"There are a lot of scam artists out there right now trying to make money and the biggest thing the protection act tells people is if somebody sends you a letter in the mail saying pay us 500-1500 dollars well save your house don't do it, there's nothing they can do for you that you couldn't do yourself," Reeves said.
In Nebraska you can also dial 2-1-1 to speak to a referral specialist who can help provide you with information and services available to those homeowners falling behind on their mortgage.
