Strange Discovery At Treasurer's Office

They're calling one of their strangests discoveries ever.

The State Treasurers Office found some unclaimed property.

So what was it?

After his business went under the owner of this property thought he had lost everything.

But after receiving a call from the State Treasurer's office Tuesday he found out that wasn't exactly the case.  In fact, he's $200,000 dollars richer.

"1200 B.C. So that's by no means a new item..."

This Bronze Phoenician dagger dates back to 1200 B.C....price tag: more than $6,000 dollars.

This 400 B.C. sword worth 5, 00 And no one knows just how much this 2500 B.C. Pharaoh mask would check out at.

Its all sitting at the State Treasurers office, teady to be shipped out to the rightful owner.

"He was pretty surprised to find out he had $200,000 dollars at least worth of artifacts that he was going to be getting back," State Treasurer Shane Osborn said.

"He" is a 65 year old former Lincoln man, now living in Oregon in a hotel, on food stamps.

The man's business in Lincoln went under years ago and he thought the bank had taken ownership of all the things with it.

Until Tuesday when the State Treasurers office called and told him.

Our research specialist started digging and skip tracing and looking for this person and we ended up locating them on the west coast.

The items had been sitting in a safety deposit box at a local bank for about 6 or 7 years... Just waiting to be claimed.

And there's plenty more.

State Treasurer Shane Osborn says there are 250 thousand more Nebraskans that have unclaimed stocks, bonds and money coming to them.

It may not be ancient pottery but on average it's around $900 dollars.

And for one Oregon man the timing couldn't be better.

This man's kind of fallen on hard times so it just shows how unclaimed property can make a difference.

The State Treasurer's office holds onto this stuff forever, so their office urges everyone to call in or go on their website to see if you or a family member has any unclaimed property.

If you would like to find out if you have unclaimed property log onto www.treasurer.org or call 471-2455.
