Snowstorm Hits Southeast Nebraska

Some parts of the area had their first taste of winter this morning. Here in Lincoln, we had our first snow last month. But were missed completely by Monday's storm. To our south, however, it was a different story. Most of Gage county was still waiting for the first snow of the year, and Monday, they got it.

People in Beatrice woke up to a very white morning. Reports say the first snow fall left area of the city with 5 to 6 inches of snow. And even more in other parts of Gage county. The first big snow fall of the season had people in Beatrice out shoveling through the snow.

For some it was expected, but that doesn't mean it was welcome.

"I've lived here all my life and you know that is gonna come with it, but it sure was nice having our Indian summer. Its been a long time coming for a first snow," Susie Miller said.

The blanket of snow that covered the streets kept police busy through out the morning. 13 accidents had already been reported by noon in Gage county.  Sergeant Jerry Lamkin says the numbers are unexpectedly high. Usually drivers are more cautious during the first snow fall.

"Whats different between high numbers this time, compared to a normal first snow fall is how wet it is how heavy it is and how slick it is," Lamkin said.

One driver who was out before the plows this morning says it was a tough drive to work. "It was very challenging this morning because it was so slushy it through your car all over the road," Miller said.

The winter weather advisory is expected to last into Tuesday morning. Sergeant Lamkin also said to make sure and give your self extra time getting to work and be careful on those slick roads.
