May 3 rd 1999, Liz watched in awe as the meteorologists at the Oklahoma City television stations warned viewers of the severe weather situation bearing down on the city. Liz remembers that they provided non-stop coverage warning viewers to take cover. She believes that they saved countless lives. It was years before that event, when Liz became fascinated with tornados. She remembers, at a very young age, watching a small tornado, just blocks away from her neighbor’s driveway. These two events coupled with the desire to inform and help people led Liz to UNL where she studied meteorology and journalism.
While going to school, Liz won a Hearst Journalism Award for Hard News Reporting and learned about weather reporting while completing three different weather internships; at KFOR(Oklahoma City), KM3(Omaha) and at Channel 8 KLKN-TV. Liz made such an impression during her internship at Channel 8 KLKN-TV, that she was selected to join the Channel 8 Eyewitness News Weather staff.
In her spare time, Liz enjoys reading and relaxing. She is also an avid swimmer and loves to play with her dogs. You can watch Liz Dorland’s weathercasts during the weekend editions of the Channel 8 Eyewitness News.
