  • Can your child see to learn? Each year, one in five children enter kindergarten with a vision problem that could affect their ability to learn - In an effort to detect vision problems in children before they enter school, the Eye Care Council developed the SEE TO LEARN® Program - Through the SEE TO LEARN® Program in Nebraska, more than 140 optometrists are working in their communities to educate parents, educators, child care providers and others about the warning signs of vision problems - They also offer free vision assessments for three-year-olds throughout the year - October is SEE TO LEARN® Month in Nebraska - For more information about scheduling your three-year-old for a free vision assessment through the SEE TO LEARN® Program call 1-800-960-EYES or visit the Council on the web at www.seetolearn.com or the Nebraska Foundation for Children's Vision web site at www.nechildrensvision.org

  • VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR MDA SUMMER CAMP - WHO:   Individuals who want to be volunteer counselors and medical staff to care for youngsters with muscular dystrophy and related diseases - Volunteer counselors must be at least 16 years old. Campers' ages range from 6 to 17. Each counselor is a companion to an MDA camper, helping them with camp activities (swimming, sports, horseback riding, arts & crafts, etc.) and day-to-day activities (eating, bathing and dressing) - Additionally, MDA is seeking physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists and other medical professionals to be volunteers for the camp's medical staff. Medical staff will supervise and maintain the health and well-being of all camp participants. - WHAT:  Help make the magic happen at annual MDA summer camps throughout the country. More than 4,300 volunteers are needed to help provide some 3,500 campers with an unforgettable week at MDA summer camp.   • Former Miss Nebraska and Miss America, Teresa Scanlan is featured in a new temporary exhibit that at the Nebraska History Museum, Centennial Mall at P Streets, Lincoln - Fashionistas will enjoy many of Scanlan's pageant costumes, including a shimmering gown by the couture house Marchesa, Scanlan's winning Miss Nebraska gown, along with her various costume changes from the Miss America pageant, will be on display - Sparkly shoes, sashes, trophies, and even a custom made diamond ring by Lincoln jeweler Darold Kamarzin give the exhibit more beauty pageant glitz - The exhibit continues through September 3, 2013 - Free admission - For more information: 402-471-4782 or www.nebraskahistory.org

  • Wear Yellow Nebraska will be hosting the 10th Annual Wear Yellow Ride on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Strategic Air & Space Museum, Ashland, Nebraska - The bike tour aims to raise funds and awareness for Wear Yellow Nebraska which is a local grassroots organization fighting against cancer through advocacy, awareness and fundraising - Distances: Over 500 participants from as far as North Platte, Syracuse, Fremont, Council Bluffs, Lincoln, and the Omaha, Nebraska metro area will choose their course distance with 10, 22, 38, 51 and 62 mile options available (all distances are approximate and may vary up to one half mile) - Go to www.wearyellownebraska.org for more details
