About 70 people lose jobs at Nebraska City plant

About 70 people have lost their jobs at a meter manufacturing plant in southeast Nebraska. Elster American Meter says it has eliminated its third shift at its Nebraska City plant because of a drop in product demand.

Spokeswoman Noreen Pratscher said Thursday that after the layoffs, the plant still employs 540 people. Elster American Meter is a subsidiary of The Elster Group, which says it has more than 7,000 employees and operations in 38 countries. It is based in Essen, Germany.
