City Council To Discuss Booting Cars

Posted: Updated:

A new form of parking enforcement could be making its way to Lincoln and many people actually like the idea.

You just found the perfect parking spot...only problem is you don't have any change... Get enough tickets and your car might be towed.

That could change, though, as the Lincoln city council will hold a public hearing Monday to discuss using wheel boots, instead of towing.  Driver, Ron Rattigan says, "downtown Lincoln has always had a problem with parking and this might make it cheaper for people to get their car back instead of getting a ride down to the tow truck place and having to pay the money to get it out."

The cost for removing the boot would be 50 dollars...the average tow runs about 100.  City Council member Jon Camp says not only is it simple, it helps the downtown parking problem... "What we want is to have ample parking for citizens, for customers, for clients to come to those vicinities, make parking a real easy to–do item. The purpose of this is to do that, is to get people to comply and plug meters and make parking spaces available."

So who would get the boot? Any driver who has at least 250 dollars in parking violations. That's about 5 tickets or parking in a handicap spot twice.  Driver, Sandy Strop says, "I think the boots would be a good idea because people would see that happening more than just somebody's car is there and then it's gone, so, I think the boot would be a good idea."

No matter the outcome, the next time your downtown, grab your change and plug that meter... That way you don't have one of these waiting for you.
