A decision by the Lincoln City Council today could cost you some money. It all centers around preventing ice jams.
It doesn't look like much, but a roll of the sticky stuff can help with house safety, according to some local roofers. Safety is what some city council members say they're all about.
"Unlike a lot of elements of our code, which are about improving energy efficiency. Let's say adding more insulation, but they don't really go to safety, this is about water getting in, it's about preventing mold," said Jonathon Cook, council member.
That's why the city council voted to require any new roof, whether it's on a new home, or you're replacing an old on, be accompanied by a protector. It's so the freezing and thawing doesn't cause more problems for homeowners.
Problems like ice dams, which are often not covered by insurance. The vote didn't happen without a debate. Not everyone was on board with requiring the precautions. Doug Emery and Jon Camp simply wanted to encourage it.
"I've talked to some roofers who say there's no guarantee that this is needed or that it will solve the problem, so if it doesn't solve the problem and it's not needed. To me, that difficult to mandate," said council member Jon Camp.
Especially with the added cost. It's estimated to add an extra $125 to $500 onto the cost of a small to average sized home. A cost you're now required to pay after a unanimous vote Monday by the city's leaders.
