Sally Gordon passed away just after midnight this morning. Her son said there's no better day to remember her tremendous life.
Sally Gordon was about a month shy of celebrating her 103 birthday.
We say goodbye to Sally, one of Nebraska's greatest treasures. While many take the time to celebrate their loved ones on Valentine's Day, Sally's family is doing the same, but in a different way.
Jim Gordon, Sally's son, said, "Love was in her heart. She loved everyone she met. Almost everyone who met her loved her and it was just perfect in that regard."
A lifelong worker, Gordon began work as the Sergeant-at-Arms with the Nebraska legislature at 75.
At 101, she was honored as 'America's Outstanding Oldest Worker for 2010.'
For Sally, the greatest honor was getting up and going to work at the capitol.
"She saw it being built," said Jim. "She saw them put the sower on top. My mom and dad danced in the Rotunda when they dedicated the building. That was her home away from home."
A mother to four and a grandmother to seven, those who knew her, say she was someone who was never afraid to do anything on her own.
"Oh, ho, independent?" said Jim. "You look independent up in the dictionary, that's her photograph."
That's not all.
"According to her physician 'a tough old bird,'" said Jim.
Just a few weeks ago, Gordon fell in her bathroom which caused her to be hospitalized. Her son said she knew it was soon going to be her time. But true to her fashion, she still put everyone else first.
"She kept saying, 'Jimmy, I'll worry about you.' And I said, 'Why would you worry about me?' And she just had it in her mind that her life had been good. Heaven was going to be better."
Sally Gordon's funeral is scheduled for tomorrow.
Her family said they also plan to have a celebration of life around her birthday next month.
