Updated: Masked man found hiding in UNL Sorority house

Posted: Updated:

Imagine this, you wake up early one morning to find a man with a mask on, standing there, in your basement. That's exactly what happened at the Delta Delta Delta sorority house. And now, UNL police are warning women to be careful.

Once the man realized he was spotted, he immediately took off without hurting anyone. But many are shocked that this happened. It's a terrifying thought, you're at your sorority house, you wake up at 4 a.m. and you find a man dressed in dark clothes, wearing a ski mask and goggles--in your basement.

It's the kind of thing most people don't want to think about. "Who wants to wake up and see someone standing there? You don't know if you know him, they're just dressed in all black. You don't know what they're going to do," UNL student Katlin Leonard said.

UNL police say the intruder took off once he'd been seen, luckily none of the girls was injured and nothing appeared to be taken. They also tell us they're not ruling out the possibility of a joke gone too far.

"Even if it's a prank, you have to look at it from the eyes of the victim. It could be a very frightening situation for a victim and it should be taken very seriously," UNL Police Chief Owen Yardley said.

Police tell us until the man is caught, they're advising all sororities to follow these safety tips: Don't ever give out door codes to anyone. Report all suspicious behavior, and have a buddy with you when walking late at night.  They also say make sure all doors are locked round the clock.

"It's a huge deal for people to feel safe and secure when they go off to college, first of all. And then when you have someone like this that comes to a house like that, it's like, it could happen to anyone, anywhere," UNL student Sidney Goodnight said.

The suspect is described as being six feet tall, wearing dark clothes, a ski mask, and goggles. Anyone with any information is urged to contact UNL police.
