It's been around more than three decades but if changes aren't made, the veterinary center on east campus could lose accreditation. Faculty members say problems with ventilation and overcrowding could cost valuable research funding.
Friday morning, the board of regents toured the building. The University is asking the state for an initial 5 million dollars to start planning a new facility. The cost would cover building and site research.
"The money we are asking for is actually we feel is a responsibility of the state to support this lab because what we do is pivotal towards the livestock industry of this state," Dr. Bruce Brodersen, Assistant Professor said.
Governor Dave Heineman says the project needs private donations rather than state funding. The cost of a new building would be about 50 million dollars.
