It's been a hard weekend for 19-year-old Nadia Morales. She was the only member of her family not involved in a car crash last Friday, but she still waits at the hospital on Monday for them to recover.
Just outside of Lincoln on Friday, there was a fatal accident at the highway 77 and Davey Road interchange. 46-year-old Christopher Fayes of Ceresco died after hitting an SUV filled with all of Nadia Morales' family. "I just dropped to the floor, I couldn't believe it," said Nadia.
On their way to visit Nadia, a sophomore special education major at Weslyan, plans were interrupted when authorities say Fayes plowed through a stop sign. Nadia's mother, father, and three younger brothers were taken to Bryan West with non-life-threatening injuries.
Her mother and her 5-year-old brother are still recovering there. "I know my dad is struggling with everything because he saw what happened. He saw my brother crying, so it changed my dad and I do think it'll change my life," said Nadia.
The injuries from the accident could mean Nadia would need to quit school for the semester and run the family business, a grocery store in Schuyler. Still, she says she's glad they were on their way to visit her, because out of every tragedy she sees hope.
"I don't regret it because even though this was a bad thing, just going through all of the emotions and just not knowing if they were going to wake up or not, it's just bringing the whole family together. I've seen family that I haven't see in three years, so that'll help," said Nadia.
The autopsy on Christopher Fayes should be complete by tomorrow.
