Former Husker pleads not guilty to assault on officer

Alfonzo Dennard

Alfonzo Dennard filed a written not guilty plea Tuesday.

Dennard was scheduled to appear in Lancaster County District Court Wednesday, but filed the written waiver instead.

Last month, Lincoln police arrested Dennard near a downtown bar. Police say he punched an officer who was trying to break up a fight Dennard was involved in. The officer suffered a cut on his jaw.

A trial date has not yet been set. Dennard, a cornerback, was selected in the 7th round of the NFL draft by the New England Patriots.
