The caller will threaten violence unless money is exchanged.

Lincoln police are warning residents about a phone call scam that scares people into believing a loved one is hurt or in trouble.  Police say so far about a dozen Lincoln residents have received these phone calls and no one has reported falling for the scam.

Police say in one call a man was told his brother had been in an accident, and he needed to send money or his brother would be killed.

"The caller threatens to harm that family member unless money is sent. Usually a high dollar amount. 1000 to 2000 dollars. Typically the caller has a thick accent and is very angry and threatening," says Officer Katie Flood.

Police say these calls are scams and to hang up immediately and call police.  The phone calls are being traced to the Miami area.
