The intense two-a-days are underway. How students stay safe under the sun. We were all hoping the football season would bring some cooler temps. But practice has taken off...and the intense heat is still here.

Lincoln Public Schools say rest assured, it has a list of ways it's keeping players cool. And some of them, you may want to try too. Those young, eager players say the only thing worse than the heat this summer, is the thought of losing come fall. So they're listening to the experts to keep their bodies healthy.

The heat is on. High school football teams have taken to the turf.  Many, twice a day.  But while the work may be worth it come fall, what about the side effects of working through the afternoon warm up?

"They're really cautious about what we need to be doing to help our bodies get through these tough two weeks of practice," Lincoln High Student Trey Anderson said.

No matter which school you're at, it all starts inside.  Southeast Athletic Trainer Julie Buck comes in hours early to make sure the boys will have everything they need.  And that includes education about over heating. They're tips she says everyone can keep in mind when out and about this summer.

"If they're sleeping well their bodies are much better able to handle the heat. We take frequent water breaks, we take frequent Gatorade breaks. We encourage them to get in the shower as soon as they're done with practice. Do a temperate shower, cool that body down," Buck said.

She also adds letting the weather win is not an option.  Players will continue to practice, even if it's inside, though that's not what she recommends. They also need to get acclimated to this.

"We, the Southeast Knights, have 3, 4:30 games this fall so it's going to be hot and they need to be able to get through it," Buck said.

The first LPS football game is Thursday, August 23rd. That's when Lincoln East will take on Fremont.
