58-year-old Daniel Ottis died at the scene of the accident Tuesday night. He was descried as a good guy by his co-workers.
Authorities say Ottis was with the Ashland Police Department for ten years. "His last official duty here was he made a felony arrest of a sex offender at 6 p.m. the day before he passed," said Ashland Police Chief, Mark Powell.
Investigators say he was on his way to work on his motorcycle around 6 p.m. Tuesday when a pick-up was pushed into the path of Ottis' vehicle. He leaves behind two daughters, and his mother and father.
His co-workers spoke highly of him. "He had his quirks and he was a pack rat and if you needed something from six or seven years ago, for some reason in his filing system so he could find it," said Powell.
They say he did more than his part around the community. Powell says he remembers Ottis always trying to be the good guy. "Rather than go give that guy a ticket and make him clean-up, Dan went over there off duty to help that guy," he said.
Ashland Police says Ottis' son was killed in the line of duty back in 2002, and his father is a World War II veteran.
Other local police departments say the police force is like a family and they are stepping up to fill the void. "You have to go step by step and you have to do what you have to do to get through everything. We'll do our part and do our part for his family and we move forward from there," said Powell.
A memorial service is scheduled for Ottis next Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Ashland.
