Craig Lenz says aside from these recent shootings, his neighborhood is pretty safe, but since these things are happening, it's a good reminder to everyone to be aware and be safe.
Lenz has been living on the same block for the last fourteen years, and during that time, he's seen a lot especially when he served as a Neighborhood Watchman.
"If there's something you're uncomfortable with, simply just be aware of it," said Lenz.
One thing that seems to be new is a sudden rash of shootings and while those are unpredictable, he says other crimes can be stopped by simply paying attention.
For instance, if you see suspicious cars or people who may be up to no good, Lenz says the first step is take good notes. Write down license plates, and notify police if necessary.
"If you're not being harmed, you're not being robbed, there's no reason to worry about anything. Be discreet and be able to help the police," said Lenz.
Having been a Neighborhood Watchman, Lenz says one of the most important ways to deter crime is to have your own alarm system. If you can't afford one, there are some other options for you. For instance, you can put up a fake alarm system warning to pass of as the real deal, or, you can install a fake camera in front of your house.
For those of yo who prefer the more laid-back approach, Lenz says simply knowing your neighborhood inside and out can make a big differences. "First of all, I'm a big neighborhood advocate. Get to know your neighbors, if they want to know you."
Lenz also says some of the more basic tips are not to be forgotten. For instance, don't leave anything of value in your car and keep your doors locked.
