The University of Nebraska said a helium shortage is putting touchdown balloons on Hiatus.
The first-touchdown balloon release is one of the top five football traditions but it will not be allowed after Nebraska's first game against Southern Mississippi Sept. 1. The balloon release tradition dates back to the 1940's.
Husker fans can expect to see 2,000 to 2,500 balloons during the first game so fans can take pictures. During most games days, 4,000 to 5,000 balloon are launched after the 1st touchdown.
The balloon release will remain on hiatus until after the global helium shortage is resolved. Helium is also used to treat respiratory problems and in MRI's.
