The first day of school also serves as a reminder to look for students walking and extra traffic.
Many parents dropping off their children at Irving Middle School on Tuesday morning were emotional and not quite ready for summer to be over. For others, it was chaotic as cars backed up and children were seen darting out into traffic.
"It's hectic, kinda hectic, but you just have to have patience and stay in control of things," says Sandy Warren, an Irving grandparent.
"Kids are anxious, kids are excited, they get back to see old friends, they've got new challenges ahead of them, new teachers, new buildings possibly, so they're pretty excited and maybe not always thinking about safety when they dart out of the car," says LPS Security Director Bill Kuehn.
Parent Dave Fosbinder says he drove to Irving, but parked blocks away to avoid the bottleneck.
"Usually the traffic around here is pretty crowded, so we wanted to give people a chance to get in and out without crowding it."
If you're driving around town and you happen to see those signs flashing not only does it mean you need to slow down but you also need to be on the look out for students crossing the street, children riding their bicycles and parents dropping their kids off.
One parent recommends arriving early, and take your time.
"We remind parents to be cautious, to be aware of where the children are at and where they could pop out from," says Kuehn.
