The People's City Mission is asking for your help. Now that school has started, supplies are still needed.   The Mission was able to help many kids with supplies for the first day of school. Now they're asking people to bring more supplies that will last the kids throughout the school year.

Now that school is back in session, the People's City Mission needs your help. Nearly 5,000 kids were helped through the Distribution center so far but school supplies are running thin!

"Normally what we get in this time of year has to last us for the whole year and we are considerably short of that goal," Jerry Owen, the Associate Director of The People's City Mission said.

Jerry says they are in need of at least 100 backpacks. But the biggest shortage is in everyday supplies like pens, pencils and notebooks. 77 kids are currently at the Mission including four of Wendi and Joe Mogensen's. Their children all received donated supplies from the mission.

"That the kids know that just because they're in this place doesn't mean they're cut off from the rest of the world...that other people do care about people that do need help," The Mogensen's said.

The Mission says there has been a shortage of supplies since before school even started. But kids were able to pick out their own backpacks and supplies to try and get them excited for school.

"I think it gives them self esteem you know and pride. And that's what we're trying to do is that even though they're homeless, it's important to us that they don't feel homeless," Owen said.

He says the most important thing is that these kids feel as normal as possible and that starts with having new supplies like all the other kids. Supplies can be dropped off at the People's City Mission or the Distribution Center.

You can drop off donations at the Mission at 110 Q Street. They are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

The Distribution Center is located at 26th and O Streets. They are open from 9:30am to 5:30pm 7 days a week.
