There were roads just north of Crete where you couldn't see a foot in front of you the smoke was so thick keeping fire crews busy well into the night.

Fire officials say they were first called to the 25 acre fire just north of town around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. Once they got there, another even larger blaze broke out just a mile up the road.

Crete Fire Department had to call back–up from Southwest, Dorchester, Pleasantdale, and Hallam. It took crews hours to control the burning hay bales, flaming the dry grass and 25 mile per hour winds.

"We've been worried about this for many many many many many many weeks now so this is just the worst nightmare something like this happening," said Lt. Josh Page.

To make it even worse, just minutes after crews started to put out the two grass fires north of town another fire sparked in town.

It was started by a jeep that got stuck in the field and caught the grass on fire. It burned anywhere from five to ten acres.

Crews also added because it was hot out there today, they went through even more firefighters because they needed everyone to stay hydrated and not overheat out there.
