Mayor Chris Beutler is urging residents to cut back even more on outdoor water use to avoid more severe mandatory restrictions.
While flows in the Platte River remain at historic lows, the Mayor said the flow has temporarily stabilized. But water use this month has averaged 60 million gallons a day. The City's latest goal for water use is 55 million gallons a day.
"City officials continue to monitor our water supply closely," Beutler said. "We also must look ahead at the City's needs over the next few months, especially if the drought continues through November. We must cut back on water use now in order to begin to replenish the aquifer."
As of Friday morning, Lincoln police have issued 192 water violation citations since Aug. 9, and they've responded to 861 calls.
Under mandatory water restrictions, all water customers must follow the designated day schedule for all outdoor watering, including the washing of vehicles:
• Properties with street addresses ending in even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8) must limit outdoor water use to Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
• Properties with street addresses ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7 and 9) must limit outdoor water use to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
• No watering is allowed on Mondays, except for designated uses.
• Property owners with more than one street address at the same location can choose either schedule and must notify the Lincoln Water System (LWS) of their decision.
The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) has issued about 200 tickets for watering violations so far. Because of the high number of tickets, the Lancaster County Court is allowing people who have received tickets to waive court appearances and pay $100 fines plus court costs. Those convicted of the misdemeanor violation can receive a fine of up to $500 dollars or up to six months in jail or both. Violations can be reported to the LPD non-emergency number - 402-441-6000.
"The rain today is very welcome and should help to reduce water use this weekend, but we must focus on the long-term situation," Beutler said. "While residents are legally allowed to water three days a week, we encourage them to voluntarily cut back to two days or to water less on their designated days. We need all residents and businesses to do their part to maintain adequate water supplies." "
