A neighbor shoots and kills a pit bull to save another dog's life.

It happened late this morning at a home in Lincoln, near North 28th and Merrill street.

The pit bull and German Sheppard were in a dog pin together in their owner's backyard.  They started fighting, loud enough for neighbors to hear.  The owner tried to break it up, but couldn't.

A neighbor stepped in and shot the pit bull with the owner's permission.  Some neighbors are disturbed by the shooting, but police feel it was justified.

Neighbor Marty Brown says, "somebody's living right across the street with a gun—to begin with."

Sergeant Don Scheinost says, "something that neighbor didn't have really any other choice in a humane effort to protect the German Sheppard and that's what he was trying to do and that's what our reports will reflect at this point."

No tickets were given.  The German Sheppard was taken to the vet with severe injuries.  Animal control is still investigating.
