The Lancaster County Sheriff's office says an alert neighbor helped them catch the suspect.
Three days later, she says she still can't believe what happened. Especially the fact that it all happened during the middle of the day.
"You don't expect something like this to happen in the middle of the afternoon."
The 84–year–old woman is describing what she says was her worst nightmare. Last Friday, she was at her home in Lancaster County, when the sheriff's office says Wellington Carngbe, walked in the garage door.
"All of a sudden, it seemed to me, was a man standing here with a gun on me," says the victim.
That's when she says the 26–year–old demanded she lay on the ground while he looked through the house...
"The thing I remember most was the gun. No doubt about that...scared me to death to have a gun pointed at me. That's something that hadn't happened in my life ever."
As her husband came home from across the street, the couple says Carngbe ran from the house and drove away.
But Carngbe's get–away didn't last long. A neighbor who saw his car that day thought it was suspicious, so he wrote down the license plate number, which led deputies to this neighborhood near Evergreen and "A" streets, which is just east of Pius High School. And after a 10–hour stakeout, Carngbe was arrested on Saturday night.
Now, the victim says she'll be more alert than ever.
"It's very important that you not only keep your home safe, but that your neighbors are well aware of what can happen."
The sheriff's office is also investigating whether Carngbe is responsible for a burglary that happened near 98th and Van Dorn. He is a convicted felon and has served jail time with the Lincoln police department.
