Shane Wood was critically injured two months ago after rolling his pickup on his way back from work. He was ejected and later suffered a brain injury.
3-year-old Payton is the only thing her father remembered when he finally woke up.
"He was ten minutes outside of Lincoln when he aspirated and coded. They said he went with a lack of oxygen for about eight minutes," said Shane's sister, Jamie Kailing.
The 27-year-old is finally starting to improve, opening his eyes and for the first time since the accident, talking.
"We've been waiting for that for so long," Kailing said.
It's those little things that friends and family were celebrating Monday. A benefit, including a raffle and waffles, was held at Cavett Elementary, the school where Wood's father works. "We know it's from the prayers and support of all our friends and family that he's doing as good as he's doing," said Kailing.
Wood is recovering at an Omaha hospital and these funds will help pay for his fiance and daughter to travel there and back. It's been a difficult time for the family, but these four small words, 'we won't give up,' helps them to keep moving forward.
"We heard from some doctors that he's never going to be able to do anything that he's doing now and he's starting to prove every single one of them wrong. We can't wait to take him back and show them that they're wrong and he is going to get better," Kailing said.
A fund is also set up at the Lincoln Federal Credit Union. Donations can be made to David Wood in the care of Shane Wood.
