With the Husker football season kicking off this week, police remind fans of several city ordinances to help maintain safety.

Downtown Lincoln, and adjoining residential neighborhoods will be brimming with alumni, students and fans.   Police remind fans of the following ordinances:

-Drinking in Public: It is unlawful for any person to consume alcohol in or on the public streets, alleys, sidewalks, parking areas, roads or highways within the city.

-Drinking in Vehicle:  It is unlawful for any person to consume alcohol inside vehicles while upon the public streets, alleys, parking areas, roads and highways.

-Open Container:  It is unlawful for any person in the passenger area of a motor vehicle to possess an open alcoholic beverage container while the motor vehicle is located in or on the public streets, alleys, parking areas, roads, or highways within the city.

-Littering:  No person shall throw or deposit litter in or upon any street, sidewalk, skywalk, or other public place within the city except in public receptacles, in authorized private receptacles for collection, or in official city dumps.

Police say officers in Northwest Lincoln will be active in the North Bottoms neighborhood, watching for violations.  Historically, this area, just north of Memorial Stadium, has been the location of complaints.  Police urge citizens to keep these ordinances in mind when attending gatherings and while participating in downtown events.
