LPS officials say as many as 550 classrooms are without a flag.

We're two weeks into the new school year at LPS and while many things tend to stay the same, this year has brought about one important change.

Earlier this month, the Board of Education made it mandatory for school districts to set aside time to recite the pledge in the presence of an American flag.

But, what do you do if there is no flag?

"We have 100 and some classrooms and I think there are about 20 and some that do not have flags at this time," said Lincoln High School Principal, Mike Wortman. Lincoln High isn't alone.

LPS officials say more than 500 classrooms in the city are minus a flag, and while they're working to add them, the cost might not be cheap and they hope others will step in to help.

"Community members have said that they would kind of get together and help us with that so we're hoping that will take place because that would help us defray the cost," said Dr. Pat Hunter-Pirtle with LPS.

Officials at Lincoln High School say even though there are still some classrooms without a flag, they've devised a plan to make it work. They've put up a poster as a substitute and even though it's not the real thing, it gets the job done.

LPS officials hope to have a flag in every classroom by next semester. Some say, the sooner, the better. School officials say they're not sure how much each flag will cost, and anyone interested in helping should get in touch with LPS right away.
