Thursday, the University added a piece that symbolizes the beginning of the end of construction on Memorial Stadium.

It's only been a few months since construction started on the east stadium and the frame is already finished. The last piece of steel was signed by all the key players in the project, from the construction workers to the chancellor and Tom Osborne, and up it went.

"Harvey and I were planning to life the beam and put it into place personally, but I guess somebody's going to use a crane or something which is kind of cheating," said Osborne.

It soared through the sky with an evergreen tree and flag on it. The tree's there because no one was seriously hurt during construction and means good luck for the rest of the building process.

The flag was to show patriotism and freedom. The new extension isn't just adding 6,000 seats. "It will put us somewhere in the top ten nationally and certainly will put us on the map," said Osborne.

BUt it will also be used for health and performance research. The addition in East stadium is going to be very helpful to develop a research program. The research hosts a variety of things, including state-of-the-art equipment for the study of brain injuries.

This is not only drawing in big names in science, including the Ivy League, but it will also be a tool for recruiting high-achieving students and faculty.

With all the construction, there will be signs helping fans get to their East stadium seats. The project should be completed by summer of next year.
