The U.S. Secretary of Education will give the prestigious Blue Ribbon School award for academic excellence to six of Nebraska's schools. These schools are among 269 other schools in the country identified as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
The recognition is given to schools that either show high performance on assessment tests or show a lot of improvement on tests and enroll at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Nebraska schools given the award include:
Norwood Elementary – Lincoln
Mount Michael Benedictine School – Elkhorn
Skutt Catholic High School – Omaha
Bloomfield Jr-Sr High School – Bloomfield
Elgin Elementary School – Elgin
Potter-Dix Elementary – Dix
U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, will recognize the winning schools during a ceremony in November. "Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and that education is the surest pathway to a strong, secure future," said Duncan.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools program has been around for 30 years. In that time, the program's given out awards to almost seven thousand schools.
