Attorney General Jon Bruning says Sen. Brenda Council of Omaha was charged for failing to report expenditures out of her campaign account. She's agreed to plead guilty to the charges in Lancaster County District Court next Tuesday.
More specifically, Bruning says Council withdrew more than $63,000 in campaign funds at various casinos between January 2010 and July 2012.
"The expenditures were not disclosed on her campaign finance reports as required by law. Senator Council has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of abuse of public records in Lancaster County District Court," Bruning said.
Earlier this year, the Attorney General's Office received information from law enforcement sources that Senator Council was using campaign funds for purposes not allowed under Nebraska law. An investigation was conducted with the cooperation of the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission (NADC).
Abuse of public records is a Class II misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of six months in prison and/or a $1,000 fine.
A call made to Sen. Council's office was not immediately returned.
