A couple wakes up to the crackling sound of fire after their slow cooking smoker catches the home on fire.  The couple was smoking meat over night.  Firefighters say the smoker started the deck on fire and the flames quickly spread to the house.

The fire call came in Friday morning a little after midnight near South 28th and Briar Rosa streets.  The fire startled the homeowners out of bed.  They rushed out of the house without injuries.

Fire officials said the constant heat from the smoker near the house or a spark most likely started the blaze.  Firefighters' main concern was the fire in the attic.

"Heat, smoke and fire is allowed to build pretty rapidly in that area and it can sometimes go undiscovered for a few minutes and that makes the difference of saving a house or losing one.  So, we're real aggressive getting up in there and getting it stopped in that attic space," said Capt. Dean Delany of Lincoln Fire and Rescue.

Fire officials said they got to the scene at just the right time and were able to save most of the house.  Capt. Delany recommends keeping slow cooking smokers away from your home and to use them only on concrete.
