A farmer just outside of Ashland finds a body burning in his field. Now, officials are treating the case as a homicide.
The autopsy began Tuesday afternoon. Officials say they need one to determine the gender of the person and the cause of death. They tell us they won't know anything until Wednesday and need to call in a special Orthodontist to help identify the body.
It's like a TV series script--almost unbelievable. But the owner of the farmland located just east and north of Linoma Beach, near Ashland, told our media partner, Action 3, the image of the charred body he found around 8 o'clock Monday morning remains all too real in his mind.
"To be honest with you I didn't look at it that much," he says. "It was a little disturbing."
The farmer says he called 9–1–1 after he noticed smoke in the field and took a fire extinguisher to try and put it out himself.
"When I called 911 they said that someone reported the fire already and I said well you need to make sure the sheriff comes with them because there's obviously a body here."
After Sarpy County officials examined the remains, they said they'd be treating the case as a homicide.
No word on why. They also say they still need to identify who the victim is.
As of Monday evening, they said they were still checking missing persons reports.
An alarming reality for some people living in the area. People like Trisha Duurud.
"It definitely makes me scared," says Duurud. "It hits a little too close to home when something like that happens, so close to where you live. Especially with little children around, you know, you just really don't want that kind of stuff around your family."
