Lincoln girl stops talking to support sister with Rett Syndrome

A Lincoln elementary student gave up talking for 24 hours to show support for her sister.

8-year-old Emma Larson has Rett Syndrome. It's like having autism, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's and epilepsy all rolled into one little girl. Emma can't communicate with her voice or hands.

With October being Rett Syndrome awareness month, big sister Bailey decided to do something about it - go 24 hours without talking.

That was Tuesday, and on Wednesday the talkative 10-year-old described her experience.

"It was so hard. I can't imagine how Emma feels because it's like 24/7 and she can't stop time or take a break from it so she can talk," Bailey Larson said.

"Bailey loves to talk so we knew it was gonna be hard but we thought it was a good way to raise some awareness. Very proud, very proud," Bailey's father, David Larson, said.

Rett Syndrome is a developmental disorder that mostly affects girls. There are about 18 families in Nebraska that the Larson's know who have a child that suffers from it.
