On Husker game day, veterans and those in active duty are given a special recognition.
"It means the world to me—I signed up because this is what I want to do," Ron Hassler said.
Hassler said he wouldn't change his job with the Army Reserve for anything. But with dedication, comes sacrifice. For the Nebraska game, Husker Salute recognized Hassler and other heroes from around the country.
"An event like this really goes out and touches the soldiers and families and shows their appreciation for what we do every day. And the sacrifices that we make," Hassler said.
The event started in 2007 and, each year, they dedicate a weekend to more than 500 people who've spent their lives serving our country, Husker fans for not.
"I may not be a husker fan, but I am today," President Gary McGirr said one soldier told him Saturday.
Mcgirr said soldiers come in for the weekend, they tour the stadium, watch the game, and have a brunch the following morning.
This $35,000 weekend is important to recognize them.
"A great opportunity to give back and thank our veterans for their service," McGirr said.
Other organizers say this is more than just recognizing the troops, but it's about their families too.
"How much it means to, not just the military members themselves, but to their spouses, to their children," David Max of HuskerMax.com said.
Organizers said they want to expand the program, reaching other soldiers at schools across the country.
