The Nebraska bowling team finished third today out of 10 teams at the Crusader Classic, held at Valparaiso, Ind. The Huskers finished with a 7-3 overall record behind second-place Central Missouri and tournament champion, Arkansas State.
Head Coach Bill Straub was impressed with how the young group of Huskers competed in their first tournament of the season.
"It was a great start to the season," Straub said. "We got off to a good start considering the youth and inexperience we have. It was a nice performance."
Leading NU to its third-place finish was sophomore Liz Kuhlkin. Kuhlkin finished with the overall high average of the tournament, producing a 230.6. Kuhlkin had a high of 266, which came during first game of the tournament.
Freshman Beth Hedley started off her Husker career on a high note, as she posted the second-highest average on the team at 202.2. Hedley's high score of the tournament was 235.
Straub believes that the team has a long way to go, but posted a promising start.
"I expect to improve off of this tournament, but it was a nice way to start the season," Straub said.
