Donations roll into Salvation Army

The city of Lincoln steps up in a big way, helping hundreds of families this Thanksgiving.

Last night we told you how the Salvation Army was desperate for donations, having to turn people away. But it didn't take long for you to pitch in, with turkeys coming in by the truckload.

It's a whole lot of food rolling into the Salvation Army. It's welcome sight at the non-profit, where earlier this week, they were forced to turn people away due to a lack of food. But the Thanksgiving holiday just got a whole lot sweeter for these families.

"I think that the ethics of Lincoln are really good and I'm really happy that I live here because they do care," Sandy Boles said.

The city has stepped up in a big way, with donations pouring in. Originally from New Orleans, Walter Evans says having a traditional holiday meal takes him back to the South.

"My family lives far away, but having extended family over for dinner makes me feel even more at home," Evans said.

As the baskets head to their new homes, it appears this year may be one of the busiest. Over a 3 day period this time last year, the Salvation Army says they handed out about 450 baskets. This year, that number is expected to jump all the way up to 800.

It's much more than a number, says Captain Jamie Pennington.

"That's families. That's not people. That transfers into 2,000 or 3,000 people," Pennington said.

With Lincoln doing its part to help out these families, Pennington says it goes to show just how big of a role the community can play.

"It really means that there are still people out there that care about people and it's just great to see the generosity and that's what Thanksgiving is all about," Pennington said.

The Salvation Army will be open from12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday for one last round of Thanksgiving handouts. They expect a crowd so they're hoping the donations will keep pouring in.
