Doane College is ranked in the first NAIA Men's Basketball Division II poll of the season after jumping out to a 9-0 start to the season. The Tigers ranking in the Top 25 is believed to be the first in school history though Doane has received votes in previous polls. The nine wins to open the season are a school record in the modern era (since shot clock was introduced in 1985-86), topping the previous mark of eight set during the 2000-01 season. Doane was close to cracking the Top 25 that season, placing four spots outside of the poll. However, the Tigers were unable to continue their early momentum that year and finished with a losing record. The Tigers also had a quick start in 2006-07 to receive votes in the first poll but finished the year 16-12. Doane will not have anytime to relax as they face off against 8-1 Hastings College on Wednesday in Hastings. The Broncos are receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The Tigers have been keyed by their offense this year, averaging 83.8 points per game. Doane ranks 4th in NAIA Division II in field goal percentage, shooting at a 52-percent clip. They are 14th in the NAIA in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 40-percent of their attempts behind the arc. Below is the complete poll from the NAIA.

Division II Men's Basketball Top 25 Poll - No. 1

Northwood hangs onto No. 1 for third-straight poll

November 27, 2012

By Chad Waller, NAIA Director of Communications & Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the third-straight time, Northwood (Fla.) claims the No. 1 position in the first regular season edition of the 2012 - 13 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, announced Tuesday by the national office. The Seahawks were the unanimous decision and received 312 total points. On its early-season 4-0 start, Northwood has won by an average of more than 30 points.

Moving up three spots is No. 2 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) with 297 points. Checking in with the third ranking is Dordt (Iowa) with 286 points. No. 4 Eastern Oregon, who is tied for the most wins in Division II with a 12-0 mark, posted 283 points. No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan stands with 278 points.

Three teams improved at least seven spots compared to the Preseason Top 25: No. 7 William Penn (Iowa), No. 8 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and No. 16 Southern Oregon. William Penn enjoyed the best jump with a 12-spot shift. Besides holding a 12-0 record, the Statesmen top the country in 10 different statistical categories, including first in scoring offense (107.7).

The newcomers listed are No. 14 Doane (Neb.), No. 18 Mount Mercy (Iowa), No. 20 Northwest (Wash.), No. 22 Central Christian (Kan.), No. 24 Madonna (Mich.) and No. 25 Point (Ga.).

Several schools dropped out of the Top 25 since the preseason poll: Oregon Tech (No. 2), Saint Mary (Kan.) (No. 12), Saint Xavier (Ill.) (No. 14), Tennessee Wesleyan (No. 17), McPherson (Kan.) (No. 18) and Indiana Tech (No. 25).

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The second regular-season Coaches' Top 25 Poll will be announced on Dec. 4. For more information on the polls, click here.

NOTES: (All information dates back to 1999 - 2000) Oregon Tech has its streak of 90-consecutive polls snapped (dating back to Jan. 11, 2005) as the Hustlin' Owls are in the "receiving votes" category... With the top ranking, No. 1 Northwood (Fla.) has now been either No. 1 or 2 in each of the last 21 polls dating back to the 2010 - 11 season... Embry-Riddle (Fla.) owns the most No. 1 rankings since 2000 with 17; Oregon Tech is next with 15, followed by Northwood, Oklahoma Wesleyan and former NAIA member Walsh (Ohio) at 12 mentions each... Northwood now holds the longest active streak of being ranked with 54-consecutive mentions and right behind is Davenport (Mich.) with 38-straight.
