Lincoln, Neb. – Four Nebraska volleyball players were honored Wednesday morning, as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its 2012 All-America team. Senior setter Lauren Cook led the charge as a first-team selection, while senior outside hitters Gina Mancuso and Hannah Werth earned second-team honors and freshman middle blocker Meghan Haggerty was chosen as an honorable-mention selection.
Nebraska continues to lead the nation with 74 AVCA All-America certificates (first, second and third team) by 37 athletes with at least one Husker earning All-America honors in 31 consecutive seasons. In 13 seasons at Nebraska, Head Coach John Cook has coached his players to 39 All-America honors.
Cook continued to prove she is one of the nation's elite setters in her senior season, holding a nationally-ranked 11.15 assists per set average (1,372 total) in helping the Huskers finish second in the Big Ten in total assists (1,617) and hitting percentage (.292). She added another 28 service aces and 338 digs in the 2012 campaign and totaled 50 or more assists six times this season, including a season-high 56 against UCLA on Aug. 25. Cook recorded a team-best 17 double-doubles (assists-digs) on the year and helped Nebraska hit .300 or better in 18 out of 33 matches in 2012. After winning AVCA National Freshman of the Year honors back in 2009, this is her first time as an AVCA All-American.
Mancuso earned second-team honors after posting 377 total kills on the season and an average of 3.43 kills per set, while ranking 10th in the Big Ten in kills. She recorded 11 double-doubles on the year and posted at least 10 kills in 25 matches this season, including a season-high 20 kills three times in 2012. She hit .300 or better in 11 of the Huskers' 20 Big Ten contests during her senior season. Mancuso also ranked 10th in the conference in service aces with an average of 0.28 per set. She was a 2012 unanimous All-Big Ten selection and was also named an AVCA First-Team All-American in 2011.
Werth tabbed second-team honors after recording 360 total kills and an average of 3.05 kills per set for NU in 2012, also chipping in a team-high 390 digs. She tallied 14 double-doubles on the season and totaled double-digit kills in 20 of Nebraska's 33 matches, leading the team to the national quarterfinals. Werth also posted at least 10 digs in 21 matches. She was an AVCA Second-Team All-American in 2010, making this her second All-America appearance.
Haggerty tallied the first AVCA All-America distinctions of her career with an honorable-mention selection, capping off an outstanding inaugural year with the Huskers. She posted a team and season-high 17 kills against UCLA on Aug. 25, the most by a Nebraska middle-blocker since Tracy Stalls tallied 17 against UCLA during the 2006 National Semifinal match. With a hitting percentage of .333 on the season, she leads all Husker hitters in efficiency, the first freshman to do so since Amber Holmquist in 1999. She is also second on the team in blocks with a total of 113 on the year.
