The Skin Cancer Prevention Act would make it unlawful for those under 18 to use tanning beds.
The act, by Omaha Senator Jeremy Nordquist, is in response to research which links tanning bed use in adolescence to increased skin cancer prevalence.
"Research shows that those who use tanning beds before age 30 increase their lifetime risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 75 percent," said Nordquist. "If we regulate other behaviors, such as alcohol and tobacco use, tattoos, and body piercings, to protect young adults from long-term consequences, then we have a responsibility protect our vulnerable youth from preventable skin cancers."
