After nearly two and a half weeks of searching, the manhunt for 21–year old Adrian Casares is now over. Authorities say he was arrested at a home in San Antonio, Texas, Tuesday night. Casares is wanted in connection with the December 30th murder of Tyler Schoenrock of Lincoln. Sheriff's officials say he was arrested on a warrant for making terrorist threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
"Well, we've been working very hard to locate him and, obviously it's a huge piece of the puzzle in solving and closing this homicide," said Captain Gary Juilfs.
Texas officials say they received information that Casares and 26–year old Tiffany Zerley had fled in a Ford Explorer. They say it was spotted shortly before the arrest. They say Zerley also had an arrest warrant out of Lancaster County for felony shoplifting.
"I'm not sure what the relationship is, whether it is boyfriend/girlfriend. We suspect they've been together pretty much since the homicide occurred," said Capt. Juilfs.
Last week, 23–year old Miguel Castillo, who was also arrested in this murder case, went before a judge. According to court documents, Castillo admitted he and Casares drove the victim to the area where he was killed. Those documents also say he told investigators Casares was the shooter. Castillo has been charged with Accessory to a Felony. Sheriff's officials say Casares is a known gang member, and the next step is bringing him and Zerley back to Nebraska.
"We're in touch with Texas authorities this morning. It depends on their process. It's about when and how soon the pair can get in front of a judge to see whether they waive extradition. If so, they come back voluntarily. Or if we have to begin proceedings for a governor's warrant, which could take some time," said Juilfs.
Sheriff's officials say investigators will travel down to San Antonio to officially question Casares and Tiffany Zerley. The county attorney says it could take some time before Casares is officially charged.
