BROKEN BOW, Neb. (AP) _ A woman prohibited from practicing as a midwife in Nebraska and South Dakota has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of an infant.

Lexington radio station KRVN reports that 65-year-old Judy K. Jones was arraigned last week in Custer County Court in Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Jones, of Irene, S.D., helped deliver a baby in rural Custer County in September 2011. The child, Eli Fenske, started having medical problems shortly after he was born, but investigators say Jones failed to perform follow-up tests and did not contact a doctor when the child stopped breathing.

Nebraska authorities say Jones was ordered to stop practicing medicine in 1999. South Dakota authorities issued a similar order.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 21.
