Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 22, 2013
Dr. Bruce Fagel, who recently spoke at the American Heart Association National meeting and will be appearing on PBS “Need to Know” January 25th at 8pm PST, is a leading California medical malpractice lawyer and a licensed medical doctor. Dr. Fagel has successfully handled many medical malpractice cases involving medical misdiagnosis due to doctor malpractice or hospital malpractice. His law firm, the Law Offices of Dr. Bruce G. Fagel & Associates, has tried and settled more medical malpractice cases than any other attorney in California, and has obtained over one billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for his clients.
“Patients trust their physicians to accurately diagnose their medical conditions and provide the proper care to treat their medical problems. When a patient displays symptoms of a serious medical condition, it is imperative to the patient’s health and sometimes their very survival that the doctor accurately diagnoses the problem and provides the proper medical treatment,” states Dr. Fagel. “Failure by a physician to diagnose the proper medical condition of a patient or misdiagnosing one medical condition for another medical condition can lead to the wrong drugs being prescribed, the wrong medical treatment provided, and the original medical condition being left untreated which will likely cause this condition to worsen. This can lead to serious and permanent injuries to the patient, even death.”
“There are many reasons why physicians may misdiagnose a patient. Doctor’s may have a waiting room full of patients and be forced to rush through the patients not giving them the proper amount of time to properly diagnose them, they may ignore the patient’s description of their symptoms, they may be inexperienced, they may be tired, agitated or stressed, or taking a medication that alters their judgment,” warns Dr. Fagel. “There are also numerous studies that have been conducted including a study by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN released August 20, 2012 that have found nearly half the doctors in the United States are experiencing ‘doctor burnout’ which means they are emotionally exhausted, have a high degree of cynicism, or depersonalization towards their patients which leads to medical errors.”
There are various examples of medical misdiagnosis by doctors and hospitals including a misdiagnosis of a heart attack, stroke, cancer, infections, and meningitis. There are also numerous birth injuries which can occur because a physician fails to properly diagnose a medical emergency during a woman’s pregnancy or delivery of the baby, such as failing to properly identify the warning signs of a fetal heart rate monitor which may be signaling that the baby’s heart rate is significantly low. In a situation like this, the baby’s brain will not receive an adequate supply of oxygen which can result in serious and permanent brain injuries. Dr. Fagel states, “In order to determine whether medical misdiagnosis can lead to a successful outcome for a medical malpractice case, one of the first questions that must be answered is could the injury have been prevented with the proper diagnosis?”
