The cold temperatures might bring in some unwanted guests to your home.  The National Pest Management Association reports that each winter millions of rodents break into homes looking for food and shelter.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns around 21 million American homes are invaded by mice during winter and that includes right here in Nebraska.

In a statement, Missy Henriksen from the NPMA cautions homeowners to take the pests seriously.  "In reality rodents pose a number of dangers inside our homes, polluting every inch they cross.  Once they have moved in, their numbers will quickly multiply, becoming a serious problem within weeks," Henriksen said.

According to NPMA, the most common rodents you might see running across the floor are the house mouse and the Norway rat.  They warn these rodents could spread Salmonella among other illnesses.

The National Pest Management Association outlines a few simple precautions you can take to keep these pests from invading your home.

NPMA recommendations:

-Put screens on vents and openings to chimneys
-Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your house
-Make sure to store firewood at least 20 feet from the house

The NPMA warns rodents reproduce quickly.  So, if you do see evidence of rodent infestation, they recommend you should quickly fix the problem.
