A Kansas-based developer says the location will be convenient for UNL students.
Convenience is exactly what the developer has in mind. Chris Elsey with Elsey Partners, LLC in Manhattan, Kansas says he hopes to build a multi–million dollar apartment complex on the sight of Capital Steel in the North Bottoms located just north of the UNL campus.
The site is located at 9th & X streets.
"I think it could really add to the students down here, give them another place to live that's different from the dorms. You know, that gets kind of tight," resident Matt Huntoon said.
"I think that the university needs some housing down here. If you're older, I'd kind of want to live off campus but close enough where I could walk to campus," UNL student Drew Kokosa said.
Students would be able to choose between studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom units. But for the developers, the end goal is convenience for residents.
It's a short distance from the university, and the new Haymarket Arena is within walking distance.
"It felt like it was just an appropriate area. That is, it would be attractive just because of its location and the area where people don't have to drive," Elsey said.
But it wouldn't come cheap. The developers are breaking the process down into three phases... Coming to an estimated total of 100–million dollars.
The reaction we received Wednesday has all been very positive. But the developers say they want to get plenty of neighborhood input. Which is why next Wednesday, a special meeting will be held at the Welfare Society Hall on 10th and Claremont at 6 p.m.
Some North Bottom residents say this housing is needed, and it's just an example of how the city is growing.
"The city is booming right now and I think it's only a matter of time before the city just really starts expanding upwards and outwards. I think this is great for the university," Elsey said.
If this all works out, the developers hope to break ground in August 2015.
