A police chase right through the heart of Lincoln lands a man in jail.  It happened at 25th and D around 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Police say a man ended up crashing a stolen truck into a pole, and then took off running before he was taken down by an officer.

Police say 22–year–old Shawn Brooks stole the truck from De Leon's restaurant at 12th and South.  The owner of the truck went through the drive thru, but pulled around and left his truck running while he ran inside to grab more salsa.

He was inside for less than a minute when Brooks took off with his car.  An officer saw the truck a couple minutes later and that's when the chase began.

"(He) Initiated a traffic stop near 12 and H," Capt. Jim Davidsaver said.  "The suspect vehicle fled from him.  The pursuit lasted less than ten minutes.  It was low speed because the get away driver was turning every couple of blocks in an effort to evade the officer."

Brooks lost control of the truck and crashed into a wooden utility pole.  Police say he then got out and took off running.

"Probably made it a block or two before the officer who was pursuing him in his cruiser was able to run him down and take him into custody without further incident."

Davidsaver says from the time police learned the truck was stolen, it was five minutes to when Brooks was in custody.

He was arrested for felony theft and a felony for fleeing to avoid arrest.

This isn't the first time Brooks has had a run in with the law.  Police say he was recently released from jail for a prior larceny.

He could see a judge as early as Monday morning.
