WASHINGTON (AP) _ Chuck Hagel now has the votes to be confirmed next week to be the nation's next defense secretary. A senior Republican senator, Richard Shelby of Alabama, says he'll vote for Hagel. That gives supporters the 60 votes they'll need to end a filibuster and move the nomination toward an up-or-down vote.

The White House says Republicans who oppose Hagel are putting politics ahead of national security.
