Homeowners are forced out into the cold after a fire breaks out in their home early Monday morning.

Fire crews rushed to a snowy scene after a call came in a shortly before 1:00 AM near 40th and Calvert streets.

Fire officials say when crews got to the scene they saw white smoke pouring out of the basement. Fire crews say a mattress in a basement bedroom was on fire.

Battalion Chief Derald Murrell says the homeowner shut the door to the bedroom which kept damages minimal. 'It was fortunate the occupants closed the door to the fire room, which really helped keep the damage down to the house," said Lincoln Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Derald Murrell.

The damages from the fire and smoke were confined to the basement. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
