Grand Island mayor charged with reckless driving

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. _ A misdemeanor reckless driving charge was filed against Grand Island Mayor Jay Vavricek in Howard County Monday morning.

Howard County attorney David Schroeder received the lab reports about Vavricek's blood alcohol content last week following a drunk driving arrest on March 2 on Highway 281 four miles north of the Highway 58/Highway 281 junction in Howard County.

Schroeder wouldn't disclose his reasons for not filing driving under the influence charges, nor would he discuss the blood alcohol content number.

Vavricek, 59, is due in Howard County Court at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Vavricek faces up to three months in jail and/or a $500 fine for the Class 3A misdemeanor.
