A 21-year-old is in critical condition after authorities say he was shot by his girlfriend's father.
Emergency crews and Lancaster County deputies crowded the front lawn of the Bennet home. Authorities say they were called to the town, which is about 15 miles southeast of Lincoln just after 2 a.m.
Al Layman, who lives next door, says he was sleeping when his wife woke up to the sound of screaming.
"She just heard this girl hollering, screaming for her mother," Layman said. "She said at that point she thought she should call the police."
When deputies arrived, they say they found 21–year–old Jeffery Stotler in the home's backyard with gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen. Investigators say Stotler and his girlfriend, Miranda Kinney were fighting before the shooting happened.
They say, Miranda's father, 50–year–old Michael Kinney shot Stotler with a .22 caliber rifle.
"Michael Kinney has been arrested for first degree assault and for use of a weapon to commit a felony," Chief Deputy Jeff Bliemeister said.
Stotler was taken to Bryan West where he remains in critical but stable condition.
The Sheriff's Office says Stotler is on probation for a domestic assault conviction that didn't involve his current girlfriend.
Wednesday afternoon, neighbors of the Kinney's were watching as police investigated the area. They say they're surprised something like this would happen in their quiet, little town.
"They've been very good neighbors, I mean I've never had problems here before with anybody," Layman said. "I mean it's been a nice place to live so it's kind of surprising when something like that happens."
